Challenge
West Park Animal Hospital, a large privately owned practice, wanted to improve compliance for preventive care, especially fecal testing, while reducing administrative burden on its busy team. Initially hesitant to move from Pet Health Network Pro to Vello, the team sought a modern client experience without sacrificing functionality.
Solution
In June 2025, West Park upgraded to Vello, leveraging automation and client engagement tools to transform workflows:
- Medical service reminders: Drive timely bookings for vaccinations, wellness, and other services.
- Online scheduling: Clients request appointments directly from live availability in Cornerstone.
- Automated appointment reminders: SMS and email reminders reduce no-shows and improve preparedness.
- Fecal sample checklist: Same-day reminders with collection instructions boost compliance.
- Two-way SMS with quick replies: Streamlines communication and reduces phone calls.
- Client app and portal: Provides easy access to records, prescriptions, and appointment details.
Results
When comparing fecal testing volume and practice revenue in the six months before and after using Vello, the results were dramatic and measurable. “We ran the numbers and realized Vello made a huge difference,” said Tiffany Walz, Marketing & Outreach Manager.
Fecal testing surge
West Park went from receiving an average of 335 samples/month to 556 samples/month, an increase of 66%. Year over year, this correlated to a 61% increase in fecal samples.
Revenue growth
- 19% increase in diagnostic revenue
- 17% increase in net visit growth (vs. Vello practice average of 5.3%)
Clients praised the same-day reminder as they might otherwise forget about the appointment or the fecal sample during busy mornings.
“I have gotten feedback from clients that the day of reminder is really beneficial to them,” said Emma, Assistant Manager of Customer Service.
Clinical impact
Since implementing Vello, West Park has seen more positive fecal test results from patients whose owners historically didn’t bring in samples. The most common findings: Giardia and roundworms.
This reinforces the importance of routine fecal testing—even when owners don’t notice anything concerning. Detecting parasites allows the team to treat patients they otherwise would have missed, improving individual patient health and supporting a healthier pet community overall.
“We would not have been able to treat these patients without running the tests, and this has also led to increased medication revenue,” shared Tiffany.
Operational wins
- Reduced phone calls with two-way SMS: “Our team loves that they can directly contact the client and get an answer rather than having them call or wait on hold.”
- Quick replies: “Having those quick replies makes it a lot more streamlined; being able to click and send without having to retype makes things so much easier and faster for the team.”
- Improved compliance: Vaccine and other service reminders now drive clients straight to convenient online booking.
Finanical flexibility
Since moving into a new building, West Park has had to be mindful of its budget. The increase in diagnostic revenue has provided more flexibility, allowing the hospital to afford items on their wish list in addition to necessities.
“Having a bit more room in the budget allowed us to invest in new equipment that benefits both our team and our patients,” said Tiffany.
Looking ahead
West Park is transitioning their PIMS to ezyVet to take advantage of the flexibility and speed that a cloud-based system offers. Moving to the cloud will give them access to advanced functionality and future-ready tools that support their growth plans.
As part of this shift, the team plans to unlock two powerful features:
- Digital forms will enable a fully paperless workflow, streamlining consent, intake, and other documentation processes for greater efficiency.
- Recommended care will enhance preventive care conversations by giving pet owners clear visibility to suggested services along with built-in booking. Vello syncs recommendations directly from ezyVet’s standard-of-care system, which serve as proactive reminders for services a pet may be due for or has never received.
This integration empowers practices to drive compliance, improve transparency, and support better health outcomes.
These upcoming enhancements will build on the success West Park has already achieved with Vello. As the team moves toward deeper integration, they are poised to take client communication and preventive care to the next level.
Key takeaways
West Park’s success proves that automation isn’t just convenient; it can be transformative. By enabling a single automated feature (fecal sample reminders and checklists) and letting the process run entirely in the background with no extra administrative work, the hospital drove measurable, meaningful change at scale.
The result?
- 61% increase in fecal testing
- 19% diagnostic revenue growth
- Better medicine through parasite detection and treatment
This automation not only boosted compliance and revenue but also elevated the standard of preventive care—proving that smart, automated communication can be a catalyst for growth, healthier patients, and a stronger bottom line.
